In 1929, King Albert I granted James Ensor the title of baron. Ensor chose a coat of arms and motto to go with it, notably 'Pro luce' ('For light').
In the project 'James baron Ensor', artist Lieven Neirinck explores the lives of 20 contemporary barons and baronesses before and after their noble title. He photographed them with a special self-designed device called the "MC Andi". The object in their hand highlights the period before their elevation to nobility. Their coat of arms and motto hide their contemporary photograph. Through the little ritual of opening a box, you come to the man or woman behind the noble title.
